Each January we are reminded that cervical cancer is a disease that is highly preventable and can often be successfully treated when it’s caught early. Yet approximately 4,200 women still die from the disease each year in the US, and Black women are dying at the highest rates. Lowndes County has one of thehighest cervical cancer death rates in the state, along with several other counties in the Black Belt, where a lack of gynecologists and inadequate transportation are major problems. But transportation shouldn’t determine whether people can get the care they need to save their lives. While I was fortunate during my cancer treatment, I know many others aren’t. Alabama needs to do more to ensure reliable and affordable transportation is provided throughout our state, including in rural counties, so that the ability to travel to see medical providers and access necessary health care doesn’t determine whether some people live or die. In rural Lowndes County, where I live in Alabama’s Black Belt, there is no OB-GYN. The closest one to me is in Montgomery, which is approximately a 40-minute drive.

Traveling on the West Alabama Transportation Shuttle, the only public transportation system in Lowndes County, requires 24 hours notice. Depending on the day, people riding the shuttle must wait several hours before returning home from appointments. Roundtrip travel on the shuttle to Montgomery can cost up to $18, a major barrier for many people. Preventing and treating cervical cancer at an early stage requires women to get regular screenings, including HPV and Pap tests.
I understand the obstacles other women in a similar situation could easily face. Without the ability to travel to my appointments, the outcome of my battle with breast cancer could have taken a drastic turn for the worse. In 2010, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had to travel to Montgomery for treatment five days a week for six full weeks. I was extremely grateful that I had a car, could afford gas and could work during the day because my immediate supervisor would allow me to leave promptly to receive the daily treatments I needed.

Some women faced major challenges finding someone to drive them to appointments, paying for gas, and taking time off work to travel long distances to and from appointments.
